A Little Oak Crest History

In 1927, a group of Norway businessmen with an interest in the game of golf formed a corporation called The Oak Crest Park Association.  They sold shares in the club at approximately $30.00 a share and with the proceeds, purchased a tract of land south of the city from John E Anderson for $2,800.00.  Shortly thereafter, work began on a 4 hole course which featured sand greens that had to be smoothed for play utilizing rubber doormats tied together.  Membership gradually increased and the course soon expanded to 6 and finally to 9 holes.

During the 1930’s, the corporation deeded the golf course to the city so that it could qualify for a W.P.A. (Work Progress Administration) project.  Work was then done on the road network and a water line was installed from the city throughout the course to serve the irrigation needs of a 9 hole course with new grass greens.  A rustic clubhouse was constructed on the east side of the entrance road along with a garage building to house the machinery needed to maintain the course.

In the spring of 1971, construction started on another 9 holes.  In September 1972 the new 9 holes were completed.  Some of the original holes were kept while others were either redesigned or abandoned.  In June 1973 a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the golf course now having 18 holes.

Since that time other improvements have taken place such as a new irrigation system, water hazards and bunkers.  In 1993, the members voted on and approved the taking out of a loan for the construction of a new clubhouse.  The much larger clubhouse has more room for the Pro shop, kitchen, dining and bar areas while also having locker rooms for the members.

Oak Crest is a fantastic course with a wonderful clubhouse.  The members look forward to having you play our course and enjoying yourself in our clubhouse after your round of golf.
